“HTGAWM”: L3 = 6.1 million/1.7 rating, L7 = 6.7 million/1.9 rating and MP+35 = 2.3 rating

ABC Thursday Prime (8:00-11:00 p.m. – 5.8 million and 1.4/5 in AD18-49):
Up against stronger Thursday NFL numbers week to week on CBS, with the return of “Scandal” on TGIT, ABC qualified as Thursday’s non-sports leader for the 2nd week running this season with Adults 18-49 (1.4/5), beating a “Will & Grace”-fueled NBC (+8% – 1.3/5) and dominating Fox’s drama lineup (+56% – “Gotham”/”The Orville” = 0.9/3). ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” ranked as Thursday’s No. 1 entertainment show in Adults 18-49 (2.0/8), tying NBC’s “Will & Grace,” which dropped 1 whole rating point (-33%) from its week-ago debut (2.0/7 vs. 3.0/11 last week).

“Scandal” (9:00-10:00 p.m. – 5.5 million and 1.4/5 in AD18-49): 
From 9:00-10:00 p.m., airing against NBC’s “Will & Grace” for the first time, the final season premiere of ABC’s “Scandal” ran neck and neck with NBC for No. 1 in the hour among Adults 18-49 (1.4/5 vs. 1.5/5) and beat out Fox’s drama “The Orville” in the slot by 56% (0.9/3). 

  • “Scandal” grew over its May finale(on 5/18/17) by 6% in Total Viewers (5.5 million vs. 5.2 million) and by 17% in Adults 18-49 (1.4/5 vs. 1.2/5), outdrawing its last 8 episodes and equaling its best young adult number since March – since 3/30/17. The ABC drama also opened well above the year-ago premiere of “Notorious” in the hour, improving the time slot year to year by 27% in Adults 18-49 (1.4/5 vs. 1.1/4 on 9/22/16).

 

Live + 3 Day Ratings for Premiere Thursday: 

  • The week-earlier season opener of ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” shot up to a 3.5/14 in Adults 18-49 after 3 days of TV playback, picking up an additional +1.2 rating points over its L+SD delivery (from a 2.3/9).
  • ABC’s “How to Get Away with Murder” stood as premiere Thursday’s biggest percentage gaineron the broadcast networks among Adults 18-49 with an +82% jump over its L+SD rating (growing from a 1.1/4 to a 2.0/8). In fact, “HTGAWM”’s +82% lift is the 2nd biggest of the new season to date on the broadcast networks, behind only ABC’s “Designated Survivor” (+91%).
