Freeform, Disney’s young adult television and streaming network, will debut their highly anticipated new original drama series “The Bold Type,” with a two-hour premiere episode tonight at 9 p.m. EDT/PDT. Based on the life of Joanna Coles, chief content officer, Hearst and former EIC of Cosmopolitan Magazine, the series follows the lives of three close friends living in New York City as they navigate their career, sexuality and identity, and ultimately find their own voice in a sea of intimidating leaders. Global women’s magazine Scarlet serves as the backdrop for the series. With Melora Hardin as Jacqueline, their boss and mentor, this rising generation of unapologetically fierce women are primed to take on the world and smash the patriarchy – one selfie at a time. Freeform’s love letter to modern feminism, “The Bold Type” tackles social issues and politics as much as it does love and fashion.
Described by the New York Times as “‘Sex and the City’ meets ‘Girls,’” “The Bold Type” has already garnered praise from critics at Variety, boasting that the series is “fresh and energetic.” Vulture said, “Freeform’s ‘The Bold Type’ is the best surprise of 2017 so far.” Vanity Fair called it “the bubbly, ridiculous dramedy you need this summer.” TV Guide noted that the series is “bound to knock your socks off,” and Entertainment Weekly simply said, “#LoveIt.”
In the series premiere of “The Bold Type” entitled “Pilot,” newly promoted writer Jane is unsettled when Jacqueline assigns her a big story – writing about why her ex broke up with her. Kat chases a story about outspoken photographer Adena, but is confused by her strong connection to the woman. Meanwhile, Sutton tries not to feel left behind by her best friends, as she still toils in the assistant ranks. But she shocks them when they uncover a major secret Sutton has been keeping – her scandalous affair with lusted-after Scarlet magazine lawyer Richard. In the second hour, “O Hell No,” Kat finds herself questioning her identity as she continues to spend time with Adena. Jane is horrified when she is tasked with writing Scarlet’s sex column – especially when her story turns intensely personal. And Sutton is given an opportunity to advance at Scarlet, but questions if it’s what she really wants to be doing with her life.
“The Bold Type” is executive produced by Sarah Watson, David Bernad, Joanna Coles and Ruben Fleischer. Holly Whidden is co-executive producer. The series is a Universal Television and The District production. The series stars Katie Stevens, Aisha Dee, Meghann Fahy, Sam Page, Matt Ward and Melora Hardin as Jacqueline, editor in chief of Scarlet Magazine.
Part of the Disney|ABC Television Group, Freeform connects to audiences and goes beyond entertainment with bold original programming and immersive social engagement.
